Oh Please Oh Please Oh Please

How awesome would it be if McCain actually nominated Lieberman as his VP?

I mean, not for McCain, who would lose a bunch of his crazy social conservatives. But for Obama, who would lose almost nobody to that nightmare ticket. Maybe old Jewish folk, but they're already being alarmingly anti-Obama.

Democrats don't even like Lieberman. I didn't like him when he was partnered with Gore in 2000, and his behavior since then has been nothing short of repugnant. He is slimier than most politicians, and I live for the day when the Democrats have enough power in the Senate to toss his narrow ass out of his committee seats.

But I think even McCain isn't that big of a maverick. He's already repudiated the handful of reasonable stances he once held (on torture, abortion, and the like), so picking Lieberman would be a complete 180 as far as bending to the social conservatives' whims.

A guy can dream though, right?

Lieberman is a bad pick. It'll totally freek the Christian Right, who are still implicitly anti-semitic. Even tho Lieberman is a good guy, and highly religious, they are not going to accept a Jewish VP. guess what? I think that Lieberman was part of the reason that the Christian Right so ferociously fought for Bush in 2000.

As a Jewish person, I also don't particulary want a Jewish president. Then everybody will blame Jews for all the problems. Just like if Obama is elected, it will actually make it much more socially acceptable to openly hate blacks. Because everybody always hates the President, nowadays.

My favorite? Mitt. I'm impressed with his intellect: Valedictorian at Brigham Young, combined law/MBA degree Cum Laude at Harvard. Highly successful businessman. Able to reach across the aisle (Gov of liberal state Mass.). He also the only one out of the whole packs who actually LOOKS presidential.

Well, although I think you are coming at it from a decidedly different angle, we are in general agreement. Of all the contenders, the best pick for McCain at this point probably is Romney.

But he has his downsides; you may be impressed with his intellect but it's a non-issue this year, as Obama is equally intelligent but the Republicans will want to use his Ivy-League background against him. They can't do that with Romney on the ticket.

And the fact that he's Mormon is going to rub a lot of people of many denominations the wrong way. Putting the Mormons in the spotlight, even for just the VP, may turn out badly.

I do take issue with the idea that a black President will "make it much more socially acceptable to openly hate blacks". First, I think it's already currently acceptable in too many circles to feel that way.

But I don't more openly hate drunk, ignorant Texans after 8 years of Bush, so I think that fear is a bit overblown.

Also, I don't think Lieberman is a good guy. But there are plenty of other reasons he won't be the nominee, and sadly, his faith is probably one of them.
